Moving Forward with Virtual Teacher Jobs

It’s been a few months since major changes came to China’s online tutoring industry. While many Americans used to teach English to students in China, recent regulations have made finding these kinds of virtual teacher jobs harder.

But don’t despair! There are still lots of options for teaching online. If working with kids in a virtual setting lights you up, read on to learn how to find the right virtual teaching jobs for you.

How to Find the Best Virtual Teacher Jobs

When it comes to finding virtual teaching opportunities, there are several factors you’ll want to consider to ensure you find the right fit. Use these tips to make sure you find an online teaching or online tutoring job that fits your lifestyle and your passion for teaching.

Decide What Subject(s) You’d Like to Teach

If you want to focus on teaching English online, you can still find virtual teacher jobs working with students in other countries. Sites like Magic Ears and VIPKid are still hiring for teachers to work with students overseas.

As virtual learning platforms sort out what these new regulations mean, they may be moving to working with more students in different countries and/or adjusting their programs. Despite a lot of buzz about the collapse of China’s online tutoring industry, many companies are still hiring and expanding to work with students in different countries.

Want to teach a particular subject or prefer to teach many different subjects? Sign up as a tutor or teacher on virtual teaching websites like Tutor.com, The Teacher Marketplace, or Homeschool Coaches. Through these sites, you can register to teach online in subjects and/or grade levels that you choose.

Prefer to do your own thing instead of finding virtual teacher jobs on an existing platform? Set up your own online tutoring sessions with students you have worked with before or advertise to find additional students.

Choose a Virtual Teaching Setting: Small Group or One-on-One

After deciding where you will work as an online teacher, think about whether you’d prefer to work one-on-one with students or with small groups. With one-on-one virtual teacher jobs, you likely will act more like a tutor, providing personalized support to students in one or more subject areas. As a small-group teacher, you can lead your own virtual classroom online. You can also work with large groups by teaching with a virtual academy like Connections Academy.

Consider Creating Your Own Classes

Want total control over the content you teach? Consider signing up to teach with a virtual teaching company like Outschool. As I wrote in an article for Forbes last year, Outschool really blew up with the pandemic. As families got more comfortable with online learning, many of them turned to Outschool. And many of them haven’t stopped signing up for classes with Outschool, even as their children have made it back to in-person school.

After you apply and are approved for virtual teacher jobs with Outschool, you can create a one-off or series of classes to teach on your own schedule. This can be a great way to try out curriculum that you’ve created, teach topics that you’re passionate about, and make lasting connections with kids online.

You can also create curriculum for small group or one-on-one classes that you teach independently. This kind of virtual teaching generally requires more marketing as you work to find your ideal students, but it can also provide more flexibility and independence. The great thing about teaching online is that you don’t have to pick just one way to do it— you can try multiple platforms and approaches to find the combination that works best for you.
